Floods, heavy rainfall, heat and drought have a serious impact on cities around the world. In order to proactively counteract the consequences of climate change, decision-makers are faced with the challenge of strengthening the resilience of urban systems at an early stage and in a sustainable manner.
The study commissioned by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom entitled "Climate resilience - Solutions for the city of tomorrow" shows how cities can meet the challenges of climate change with innovative and forward-looking measures. Key risks such as urban heat and flooding were the starting points for deriving five options for action. They are presented on the basis of a total of twelve case studies. For example, the study looks at coastal protection through nature-based solutions, heat warnings through digital solutions and the use of brownfield sites to reduce the urban heat island effect. In this context, challenges were also addressed, such as the growing competition for land in urban areas. At the same time, solutions were presented, such as the multifunctional use of land to meet these challenges. Particular attention was paid to cities in emerging and developing countries, but there are also examples from Germany.
