The market for voluntary greenhouse gas offsetting in Germany is confusing for many consumers. It is often not clear to what extent individual providers of climate protection services are involved in the implementation of the projects or to what extent the proceeds generated through offset certificates or climate financing actually flow into the projects. It is true that the standards offer a large number of detailed reports for each project, so that end users could theoretically obtain comprehensive information. However, this information often does not provide more clarity for those requesting it, as the number of documents is high and the content is dominated by technical details. End consumers therefore have to rely on the sales side and also judge the quality of a project by the standard, some of which have recently been criticised.
The "Contest for Climate Protection Projects" project by the Alliance for Development and Climate Foundation will recognise particularly good projects. This will make it easier for end users in Germany to access and understand information on climate protection projects and market mechanisms. In addition, highlighting positive project examples can recognise the good work of project developers and local partner organisations.
