The waste management sector in Turkey

Turkey's waste management has developed rapidly over the last few years in the course of the process of convergence with the EU. The long-standing cooperation agreements between Turkey and the EU in the area of waste management have led to a continuous alignment of Turkish waste legislation with the legal standards of the EU as well as to a gradual modernization of the waste-related infrastructure. These advances are evident in all areas of the Turkish waste management sector.

A central prerequisite for the further modernization of the Turkish waste management sector is the mobilisation of sufficient financial resources. With the introduction of waste fees and the creation of incentives for national and international private sector actors, Turkey is also on the right path here.

The situation analysis presented here is aimed at examining the situation of the Turkish waste management sector and its framework conditions in order to identify concrete development needs and potentials and to identify possibilities for further development. This is intended to present possibilities for enhanced cooperation as well as the transfer of knowledge and technology with Germany so that these can be pursued in a targeted manner by interested actors on the German and Turkish sides.
