The 12th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the UN Agenda 2030, signed in 2015, aims to implement transformational processes regarding sustainable production and consumption and integrate a broad range of stakeholders.
This report explains the methodology for a systematic monitoring of the national and international implementation of SDG 12 by Germany, as developed in a research project by the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA). It is meant as a contribution to the existing monitoring/indicator systems in the area of SDG/the German sustainability strategy (DNS). The tool for monitoring is an online database that contains implementation activities for SDG 12 by, with, and in Germany and visualises implementation on a national level.
In addition to monitoring activities, existing indicators were evaluated for their usefulness as indicators for sub-goals of SDG 12. On this basis, recommendations for the further development of the existing national indicator system were made. Building upon the results of the national implementation monitoring and the indicator analysis, the project team developed recommendations for action to move forward the national implementation of SDG 12 in the years 2021 to 2030. These recommendations are also part of this report.
