In Jordan, the production of clothing in industrial areas such as the Al-Hassan Industrial Estate (HIE) in the Irbid Governorate generates considerable amounts of textile waste. This waste is currently disposed of in municipal landfills. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has commissioned the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to implement the project "Green Action in Enterprises (GAIN)", which works with the Jordanian Ministry of Environment and local partners on sustainable solutions to this problem. Within this framework, adelphi is working on behalf of GIZ on ways to minimise textile and clothing waste.
A variety of circularity measures were explored in this study, firstly for the prevention of waste, and secondly for revalorisation of the waste. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected for this purpose from nine out of the eleven biggest RMG manufacturers in the estate, as well as three HIE management stakeholders through interviews in order to develop a Material Flow Analysis and draw conclusions on possible ways towards reducing, reusing and recycling textile waste.
