Responding to Climate Change and Security Risks in the Lake Chad Basin   

This project built upon the Lake Chad Climate Fragility Risk Assessment, in which adelphi and its partners have identified linked risks and resilience dimensions in the Lake Chad region and developed policy recommendations on entry points for intervention in the region as well as effective modes of engagement.

To move from assessment to action, adelphi implemented activities to:

• raise awareness of the joint climate-fragility risks identified through the assessment amongst relevant donors, implementing agencies and government ministries;
• support the integration of these nascent findings into relevant policy processes;
• work with implementing agencies to design or adapt implementation strategies to tackle these risks, or at the very least do no harm.

The overarching goal of the project was to promote a coherent process, policies and action which adequately take account of the climate-fragility risks and opportunities within the region. It capitalised on the numerous other linked processes and initiatives relating to the region, and aimed to feed into them wherever possible. The findings of this assessment aim to directly support or inform the processes such as those flagged in the report by the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UNSG) on the situation in Lake Chad (such as the Consultative Group on Prevention and Stabilization, bi-lateral and multilateral activities process and planned World Bank engagement on livelihoods and infrastructure).

Specific activities included i) raising awareness of and sensitising to the risks in the region (including a a documentary film), ii) support in integrating risks into policy and operations (for example through expert dialogues and briefings); and iii) implementation support (including trainings on climate and conflict sensitive programming).
