Feasibility Study for a Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) in the Indian Waste Sector

In the past years, increasing attention has been placed on the new instrument "Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs)" to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Together with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH therefore implemented the four-year project "Development and Management of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) in India" under the Indo-German bilateral cooperation. The overall objective of the project was that the Government of India starts using NAMA as one of the mechanisms for addressing climate change mitigation. To achieve this objective, the project developed NAMA approaches in selected sectors, including the waste sector.

As part of this project, a feasibility study for a waste NAMA in India was developed. The specific objective of the study was to explore the possibilities of developing NAMAs in the Solid Waste Management sector and to assess the ‘readiness’ of possible sub-sectors in waste management to be engaged in the development of NAMA concepts. adelphi was leading the consortium that developed the feasibility study.
