What to look for at COP29: Media Advisory

Berlin, 11^th November 2024. COP29 in Baku (11^th – 22^nd November) starts amidst rising global uncertainty. The confirmed return of Donald Trump to the White House presents pressing challenges for international climate diplomacy. Internal tensions have led to the collapse of the governing federal coalition in Germany, with snap elections potentially announced this week, leaving key steps to implement 2030 climate targets now in limbo.

These developments may impact key decisions at COP29 on long-term climate finance beyond 2025. Negotiators will need to advocate for significantly larger financial commitments, with current pledges far below the estimated annual need of $500 billion - $1 trillion. Ambitious commitments now become difficult to envisage without strong US support.

In the midst of global crises and uncertainty, fundamental questions of climate migration, habitability, social tipping points and climate security remain of utmost importance. Experts from adelphi, on the ground in Baku, are available for comment.
