Jan Janssen

Jan Janssen cooperates with adelphi as a Senior Associate. In his consulting, his focus lies mainly on solid waste management, greenhouse gas mitigation & climate change, environmental technologies and green finance & green credit lines. He counts with 24 years of professional experience in 18 countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia, his main clients being Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), KfW Development Bank, IADB/BID, CAF, DEG, European Commission, different governments and private companies. He is well acquainted with the instruments of international development cooperation and is a certified Capacity WORKS trainer.

During the last seven years Jan Janssen specialized in GHG mitigation in solid waste management sector, being involved as team leader or senior expert in sector mitigation concepts, NAMAs, CDM- and similar projects. Some of his current and recent projects are "Development of a Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action in the Indian waste sector", "Environmental credit line for SMEs in Costa Rica", "Solid Waste NAMA, Peru", "Global Methane Initiative, Bulgaria", "Pay-for-Performance mechanism for mitigation in waste sector, Ecuador", "Solid Waste NAMA development, Costa Rica", "Waste treatment and GHG mitigation technologies for a waste management association, Ecuador", "Cement Sector NAMA development, Indonesia".

From 2005 to 2009 he worked in CEGESTI (Costa Rica) with a GIZ-CIM contract (Programme for "Integrated Experts") as senior consultant and team leader in the fields of solid waste management, climate change, Cleaner Production and technology transfer. Among other projects, he elaborated as deputy project leader the "National Waste Management Plan for Costa Rica", and led several sector studies and project designs (CDM) in the field of GHG mitigation. Between 2002 and 2005, Jan Janssen was freelance consultant, one of his main projects as project and team leader being the "Feasibility Study for Solid Waste Management in South-East Albania" (2003-04, financed by KfW). From 2000 to 2002 he was project manager for a GIZ-financed project of Cleaner Production and packaging wastes in Santiago de Chile.

In 1997 Jan Janssen took the position of head of environmental department at IP GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany, and planned and executed development cooperation projects in Asia and Latin America, mostly on behalf of GIZ. Before he dedicated himself to international cooperation, Jan Janssen worked several years in an engineering company in Berlin, conducting mostly waste management projects as well as planning and supervising treatment plant construction, among other projects.

Jan Janssen studied environmental engineering at the Technical University Berlin (Dipl.-Ing. degree) and environmental sciences and engineering at the University of North Carolina, USA (MSc in Public Health).
