Energy Partnerships with the USA and Canada

Within the framework of energy partnerships and dialogues, Germany is working to accelerate the progress of the global energy transition. High-level exchange, technical dialogue and "best practices" as well as technology cooperation characterise Germany's close cooperation with the USA and Canada.  The partnership with the USA was expanded into an energy and climate partnership in May 2022 and currently covers the areas of hydrogen, offshore wind, zero-emission vehicles and cooperation with third countries. With Canada, the focus is particularly on cooperation in the areas of hydrogen, critical raw materials for the energy transition, energy security and the "Just Transition".

Since 2021, adelphi has been leading a consortium that supports the energy cooperations of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) with the USA and Canada. The predecessor projects from 2016 to 2021 were also managed by adelphi. The BMWK's energy partnerships and dialogues aim to accelerate the global energy transition, promote mutual learning and facilitate cross-border cooperation. In addition to high-level political exchange, a variety of formats involving representatives from politics, industry and research are implemented.

Close cooperation with partners and regular bilateral exchange

Together with its project partners – the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHK) in the USA and Canada and the Renewables Academy (RENAC) – adelphi supports the BMWK in implementing and deepening bilateral energy cooperation with the partner countries. Partner offices in Chicago and Washington D.C. as well as in Montreal and Toronto ensure the activity, accessibility and visibility of the energy partnerships within the respective countries. From Berlin, adelphi manages the implementation of the energy cooperations with North America with technical and organisational know-how.

A central component of the partnerships is the regular exchange of expertise on various key topics. In the USA, these include hydrogen, offshore wind, emission-free vehicles and cooperation with third countries. In Canada, the cooperation focuses on topics including hydrogen, mineral security and the "Just Transition". A continuous exchange in these areas leads to the development of cooperation projects and joint activities.

Delegation trips, workshops and conferences

adelphi develops and implements numerous dialogue formats with its project partners, including bilateral talks with federal and state governments and other relevant institutions from the partner countries, for instance on the occasion of the annual Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue. In addition, adelphi organises high-level conferences, energy days, workshops and local business meetings in the partner countries as well as expert trips to Germany.

For example, the first US-German Climate and Energy Summit took place in Pittsburgh on 21 and 22 September 2022; on 23 August 2022, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck visited the "Canada Germany Atlantic Renewable Hydrogen Expo" in Newfoundland and Labrador, which was co-organised by adelphi – followed by the establishment of the German-Canadian Hydrogen Alliance by BMWK and NRCan.

The partnerships thus enable personal exchange and the expansion of international networks, creating strong alliances for the ambitious implementation of the global energy transition.
