Wetlands are critical ecosystems that provide essential environmental and economic benefits, yet they are rapidly disappearing across the globe. This is of particular importance in India, which hosts over 750,000 wetlands covering more than 150,000 km². Despite their relevance for various Sustainable Development Goals in the context of biodiversity, climate resilience, and local livelihoods, wetland conservation remains insufficient and underfunded. Simultaneously, climate finance remains an underutilised resource. To bridge this gap, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is supporting a capacity-building initiative aimed at equipping stakeholders in India with the knowledge and tools to access climate finance for wetland management.
This project focuses on developing and implementing a comprehensive training module on climate finance, tailored to the needs of Indian stakeholders. The training will cover key topics such as climate finance instruments, project proposal development, and innovative financing mechanisms, with a focus on the Green Climate Fund (GCF). It will be delivered in two formats: a half-day executive briefing and a two-day interactive workshop, featuring case studies, participatory exercises, and actionable insights on securing climate finance for wetland conservation.
adelphi is developing and delivering this training. Utilising its extensive experience in green finance, climate finance and wetland conservation, adelphi will develop an engaging curriculum, provide expert facilitation, and ensure knowledge transfer. By strengthening financial literacy, knowledge to navigate the finance landscape and project development skills, this initiative will empower Indian stakeholders to leverage climate finance effectively, advancing wetland conservation and climate resilience goals.
