The vast majority of all enterprises suffer substantial losses from any kind of armed conflict in the effected country and in bordering countries. Nearly all branches of the economy therefore have a crucial interest in a peaceful and stable environment for their economic activities. Furthermore, it needs to be discussed, to which extent businesses could contribute to prevent or limit conflicts.

Involving enterprises in programmes to fight poverty and building public private partnerships could be useful approaches. This is one of the findings of an analysis of the role the economic sector plays in the context of environment and security adelphi had been commissioned with by the Federal Ministry of the Environment, together with its partner oekom research AG. The research also examined the role of businesses in triggering conflicts, e.g. over the exploitation of natural resources.
