Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer UPM is the second corporation, after Schaeffler, to register one of its production sites in China according to EMAS. adelphi supported UPM with preparing the environmental audit in Changshu.
The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme or EMAS registration of the Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer is a huge success for the EMAS Global China project, which is being run by adelphi. As part of SWITCH Asia which was launched by the European Union as a grants programme for regional environmental initiatives, it aims to promote the adoption of Sustainable Consumption and Production among small and medium sized enterprises and consumer groups in Asia.
For EMAS Global China, adelphi developed information materials for the training of Chinese environmental consultants and, together with its Chinese partners, created the legal framework for a national EMAS Global governance structure in China. The think-tank is also cooperating with the Chinese Ministries of Environmental Protection and of Science and Technology, among others, linking up European and Chinese government officials and experts, holding presentations for Chinese stakeholders and running a help-desk.
