Promoting Energiewende locally in Europe - meet adelphi at the “Forum of the Future”

The key decision-makers of the energy transition - local and regional players, business, science, citizens - will come together at the end of November in Kassel. adelphi's experts will discuss how participation and European cooperation can help sustainably transform energy systems.

The Zukunftsforum (“Forum of the Future”) on Energiewende will be held along with the 78th ANS (Working Group on the Use of Secondary Raw Materials and Climate Protection) Symposium in the documenta-Halle in Kassel on 28 and 29 November 2017. With 500 participants, the event is the largest meeting of experts in Germany on renewable energy, climate policy, energy efficiency and electro mobility in municipalities and regions.

Presenting successes, discussing challenges:

Energiewende did not play an important role in public opinion in regards to the German parliamentary election. This will change in the coming weeks, and not only because of negotiations on the coalition government. As the host country of the UN Climate Change Conference, Germany is at the centre of international climate policy. While global framework conditions are discussed in Bonn, the successes of the local Energiewende movement will be presented at the "Forum of the Future” on Engergiewende under the motto “Bring Deine Energie für den Wandel ein!“ (Bring Your Energy for Change!) Coming challenges will be discussed and possible solutions will be demonstrated.

The transfer of knowledge and experience for shaping change in cities, municipalities, and regions is therefore the focus of the two-day forum. In more than 30 forums and workshops, over 100 speakers will exchange ideas with participants from topics such as electricity, heating, and mobility to new business models, job placement, and funding programs. In addition, there is an extensive supporting program emphasising the creative side and global component of the Energiewende that also offers start-ups the opportunity to present their ideas. Companies, funding bodies and other organizations are ready to discuss new projects in the exhibition.

Local districts play a central role in the Energiewende. But how can this be shaped - and where do their limits and potential lie? With which cooperative approaches can regional contributions involving municipalities, farmers and citizens be strengthened? Together with the zero-emission district of St. Wendel and the participants, we are investigating these issues and jointly identifying the challenges and possibilities for a long-term and widespread transformation of the energy supply.

Design the energy transition across Europe – a new field for the German-Polish municipal cooperation

German and Polish municipalities are anchored in different political and regulatory contexts. Yet, questions, challenges, and solutions often display similarities.

Municipal partnerships are a well-known format for cultural cooperation. In an on-going project implemented by adelphi, four city partnerships expand their cooperation to local climate action. How to trigger and design the energy transition is a central topic, particularly with view to energy poverty alleviation.

The following questions will be discussed in this workshop:

How can intermunicipal cooperation contribute to the implementation of the energy transition European-wide ? Which exchange formats and measures are appropriate? Which topics are relevant across Europe and how can they be addressed jointly? Can the energy transition contribute to the European cohesion?

The participants will also gain insights into how cooperation with European neighbors can be approached or how existing municipal partnerships can be used fort he energy dialogue.
