As part of the conference "Security in Futures - Security in Change", which took place in Turku, Finland, in early June, Irina Comardicea and Achim Maas presented their concept paper on the effects of intentional environmental modifications.
This includes the manipulation of the climate on a global scale ("geoengineering”) as well as changing existing organisms or creating new biological life ("bioengineering"). The potential environmental impacts that may result from such deliberate interventions are central to their considerations. The biggest problem, as seen by the authors, lies in the often very limited knowledge of possible consequences that may result from such interventions in the environment. The paper emerged in the context of the SECURENV project (www.securenv.eu), which investigates potential new threats to the environment and society, and is funded by the EU’s 7th Research Framework Programme (FP7).
