Natural hazards frequently cause substantial economic and human losses in Europe. To effectively reduce the negative impacts of natural disasters requires a close collaboration between decision makers, scientists, civil society and the private sector.
In practice, however, the exchange of knowledge among the actors in the field of disaster risk reduction is often insufficient. Consequently, existing knowledge on disaster risk reduction is often neglected in decisions and the implementation of specific risk-reducing measures.
During the kick-off meeting of the FP 7 project ‘Enabling knowledge for disaster risk reduction’ in Milan on June 11th and 12th, adelphi together with partners from six EU member states and Mexico discussed how the integration of knowledge from the different actors in the field of disaster risk reduction can be improved. Within the next two years, adelphi together with its project partners will work on identifying factors that currently influence the required exchange and uptake of knowledge among the different actors. Aim of the project is to contribute to an improved knowledge management in the field of disaster risk reduction and thus to contribute to better risk management decisions.
