As part of its Fifth Assessment Report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has called for important climate protection initiatives and for states and institutions to adapt to the impacts of climate change. adelphi projects are already putting some of these measures into practice.
In early 2014, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published the second and third Draft Reports of its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) in Yokohama, Japan, and Berlin, Germany. The first Draft Report was published in September 2013 and served to lay a physical and scientific foundation. Building on this, the second Draft Report, entitled "Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability", describes the current effects of climate change, as well as future climate risks and possible adaptive approaches. The third Draft Report focuses on climate protection and the possibility of mitigating climate change ("Climate Change 2014: Mitigation of Climate Change").
The report shows that the increased effects of climate change in the future may have far-reaching negative repercussions, and that many of the implemented or planned adaptive measures will not handle the expected changes in climate. Existing knowledge of success factors and of the obstacles that adaptive measures are faced with is insufficient, according to the current IPCC report.
adelphi is therefore working intensively both in industrialised as well as developing countries in order to make communities, businesses, and societies more resistant to climate change. It is also working to close the existing knowledge gaps surrounding success factors and the obstacles that adaptive measures are faced with. This is currently taking place in the following projects.
Germany
Building a network to assess Germany's vulnerability towards climate change
Success factors and barriers for adaptation strategies
Klimalotse 2.0: Supporting municipalities in climate change adaptation
Analysis of climate risks and adaptation measures for the German industry
International
Providing decision support on climate change adaptation measures to Indian SME
SustainWater MED - Pilot projects for sustainable water reuse in the MENA Region
Developing a sourcebook on vulnerability assessment
Vulnerability Assessment in Burundi
The third Draft Report details options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the report, a further delay in stringent climate protection measures would considerably reduce the number of technological options and significantly increase the cost of climate protection. A rigorous and global transition to renewable energy and energy and resource efficiency is necessary. adelphi is involved in all of these diverse areas through its participation in different projects, both in Germany and internationally.
