adelphi at World Water Week 2018

From 26 to 31 August, adelphi will contribute to discussions on Creating Peace through the Water-Energy-Food and Security Nexus Perspective and on Water and Security: Assessing Risks and Mitigation Options in Hotspots.

We depend on healthy ecosystems for services for human development and well-being and as habitats for plant and animal life. Development efforts affect and change the environment invariably. In the process, the sustainability of vital ecosystems must not be compromised.

Since ancient times, water has played a key role in security and conflict. This role is expected to increase, as pressures over water are growing due to economic growth, population growth, ecological degradation, urbanisation, changing life-styles and growing demand for water from the energy sector.

With climate change exacerbating water stress and acting as a ‘threat multiplier’ in many unstable countries, the need for cooperation and other mitigation solutions in transboundary and intranational hotspots become even more urgent.

Side Event: Water and Security: Assessing Risks and Mitigation Options in Hotspots

The convenors will present what is known about multiple water and conflict pathways and present the first iteration of a global water and conflict early warning system, as well as a framework for assessing water and conflict issues at local levels. The audience will be invited to join round table discussion to explore mitigation options in transboundary and intra-national hotspots and identify ways to strengthen cooperation and regional stability.

In many regions, dwindling water and land resources endanger the livelihoods of the population. As water becomes less predictable, competition among resource users over the perceived benefits of different uses becomes fiercer. Applying the Nexus perspective can identify future and mitigate existing conflicts from intensifying.

This event discusses how an integrated perspective on water, land and energy resources (and their interdependencies) can reduce competition over these resources. Specifically, it examines the numerous triggers for conflict over resources on a local level as well as how an integrated perspective helps to reconcile the interests of farmers, fishers, pastoralists, and reservoir operators. After two short keynotes, participants join different round tables, each of which discusses a particular driver of conflict connected to water, land and energy resource competition, as well as the types of activities that could help foster mutually benefits.
