A growing number of states are predicted to suffer significantly from water and food shortages. To avoid tensions or conflict, it is important to recognize and identify the political potential of adaptation measures.
In their essay for renowned publication “Wissenschaft und Frieden” (Science and Peace) adelphi’s experts Dennis Taenzler and Alexander Carius discuss the increasingly important meaning of adaptation policies for peace and stability. Climate change poses a major challenge for conflict- determined states with limited coping capacities in particular. With the help of conflict-sensitive adaptation strategies, which take into account the socio-political and economic characteristics of a country, the outbreak or intensification of violent conflicts can be avoided.
Furthermore the authors commend to establish regional adaptation policies due to the transboundary nature of climate change. Cooperation between affected states and regions could help managing the challenges ahead and to avoid negative repercussions.
