Energy democracy and citizen participation in renewable energy projects and markets will be fundamental to foster a just energy transition. Socially innovative renewable energy business models, such as energy communities, energy aggregators, and renewable energy crowdfunding platforms, enable citizens to participate and engage directly in the implementation of the energy transition. The present paper analyses the barriers and enablers which social innovations face across seven EU countries. The study is based on data from our case study partners in each country and expert interviews from across Europe.
