adelphi, Ernst Basler+Partner and the Fraunhofer Institute for System and Innovation Research (ISI) have been commissioned by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) to conduct a study on the significance of "rebound effects" in terms of environmental policy. This study delivers a systematic analysis of the practical relevance of rebound effects and elaborates on potential strategies towards diminishing them. This research project report initially summarises the current level of knowledge based on literature and existing data. It delivers a comprehensive overview of current research topics in the field of rebound effects, particularly in respect to energy-related rebound effects, but also on their occurrence within non-energy resources. From this analysis, the authors draw conclusions about environmental policy recommendations and formulate research questions that still remain unanswered.
