This study, put together by adelphi for the Office of Technology Assessment at the Germen Bundestag, is concerned the way that the tourist industry deals with security risks. Consciousness of security risks for tourists and across the whole industry markedly increased as a result of the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001. These acute security risks are however just a few of a number of other potential endangerments and risk trends, particularly in relation to epidemics, poverty, climate change and extreme weather events. These new security risks will become an increasingly important part of what is understood under the expanded label of security. Against this backdrop, the tourist industry is taking an increasingly important role in comprehensive and long-term appraisal of security risks, the development of preventative measures and the handling of definite and latent risks: a role in which it has the potential to do far more than can be achieved by direct and spontaneous reaction to individual uncertainties.
