Protecting economic growth against climate change in Kyrgyzstan

The impact of global warming on agriculture, water, forestry and disaster risk reduction sectors will continue to increase until the end of this century and beyond. Climate change and its impacts in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia have developed above world average and it is expected that they will continue to do so. This is not only an environmental challenge for Kyrgyzstan, but also an economic, social, and developmental one. In view of this, knowledge of current and future climate impacts and corresponding risk assessment is a basis climate resilient planning.

This report supports and contributes to the ongoing Green Economy modelling process for Kyrgyzstan by piloting a climate risk and vulnerability assessment (CRVA) in two climate sensitive sectors that have not been in focus for profiling risk in the past: In transport and tourism. Furthermore, this report shows how CRVAs can be institutionalized and used in decision-making processes for reducing climate risk, inter alia by integrating them into the Green Economy modelling process.
