Large Carnivores in the Dinaric-Balkan-Pindos region: Management, Monitoring, Threats and Conflicts

Bears, wolves, lynx and golden jackals cross borders every day. This progress report brings together the best available evidence on their status, management and monitoring across the Dinaric-Balkan-Pindos region, and sets out practical steps for cooperation among EU and non-EU countries. 

Led by adelphi research with Carnivora Magna as the platform secretariat, and financed via the Advisory Assistance Programme, it updates the 2021/22 baseline and supports administrations in meeting obligations under the Habitats Directive, the Bern Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

• Shared tools for better monitoring and coordination, including a regional handbook and agreed guiding principles.
• Clear next steps on cross-border governance, capacity building and sustainable financing models. 

By encouraging exchange between managing authorities and stakeholders from agriculture, science, hunting and nature conservation, the platform moves from dialogue to delivery, reducing conflicts, strengthening monitoring and securing viable populations over the long term.
