Good practice in large carnivore conservation and management

Large carnivores include iconic species such as bears, wolves and big cats. Their habitats are increasingly being shared with humans, and there is a growing number of examples of human-carnivore coexistence as well as conflict. Next to population dynamics of large carnivores, there are considerable attitude shifts towards these species worldwide with multiple implications. This book argues and demonstrates why human dimensions of relationships to large carnivores are crucial for their successful conservation and management.

Chapter description

The EU Platform on Coexistence between People and Large Carnivores has collected a range of case studies demonstrating good practice in large carnivore conservation and management. This chapter showcases examples of good practice in selected locations across Europe, and discusses implications and recommendations for large carnivore conservation and management. The findings indicate that good practice cannot be conceptualized as a flawless trajectory of intended and fully anticipated events and outcomes. Instead, stakeholders adapt their actions to address the difficulties and barriers to implementation which emerge at the local level and with the involvement of a certain interest groups.
