Biodiversity and development are closely interwoven and mutually influencing areas in all countries and regions of the world. It is a complex interrelationship: Healthy ecosystems are the foundation for sustainable development, while development activities have diverse impacts on habitats. Robust and resilient ecosystems can secure livelihoods, improve food security, and enable access to water and health. This also creates political impact areas, as sustainable ecosystems strengthen governance and security, contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and offer the opportunity to generate economic growth, create jobs, and ultimately reduce poverty. Despite their importance and numerous efforts to protect them, biodiversity is declining worldwide at an unprecedented rate. The European Union has long supported biodiversity conservation and recognizes the strong link between healthy ecosystems, livelihoods, and poverty reduction. As part of its development policy, the EU aims to value natural capital and invest in a green economy that can generate growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty. The B4Life Initiative is a response to this policy framework and the EU's international commitments.
B4Life
The Biodiversity 4 Life (B4Life) Initiative aims to support economically weak countries worldwide in conserving their ecosystems, combating wildlife crime, and developing green economies. This initiative underscores the economic benefits of protecting biodiversity and ecosystems to secure livelihoods and reduce poverty. B4Life is one of the flagship initiatives of the EU's Directorate-General for International Partnerships under the Global Public Goods and Challenges (GPGC) Program. These large, multidisciplinary development programs are designed to tackle global challenges and achieve sustainable impact through clear objectives and recognizable targets. The initiative focuses on the strong connection between ecosystems and livelihoods to contribute to poverty reduction. Its goal is to halt biodiversity loss and fulfill the European Union's commitments by fully integrating biodiversity and ecosystem conservation with socio-economic development and poverty eradication. An innovative and cross-sectoral approach is intended to help consolidate all biodiversity-specific activities of the European Commission to create more coherence and a clear strategic framework.
B4Life operates in three priority areas:
Good governance for sustainable management of natural resources.
Ecosystem conservation for food security and sustainable rural development.
Ecosystem-based solutions for a green economy.
Additionally, the initiative includes a special window to address the wildlife crisis associated with increasing illegal trade, which requires special attention. These efforts reflect the growing international commitment to combating global biodiversity loss and the wildlife crisis. In the EU context, it is expected that the B4Life Initiative and its technical assistance facility will enable the Commission to implement coordinated measures to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services in the most vulnerable regions while enhancing EU communication and visibility towards the donor community.
adelphi, in collaboration with AGRECO and PARTICIP, plays a central role in implementing the B4Life Initiative. As part of the consortium, adelphi provides a variety of tools and services to make international cooperation and the EU's development measures in biodiversity and ecosystem protection more efficient and visible. To successfully implement the initiative, adelphi supports the entire project management and implementation. Additionally, adelphi provides a pool of experts who advise the EU and its responsible bodies on international environmental and biodiversity policy issues, both permanently and intermittently.
