Nile Basin Initiative (NBI)
Support to Climate Strategy and Climate Finance Readiness for Nile Basin Initiative
The impacts of climate change, including increased temperatures, altered rainfall patterns and more frequent extreme weather events, paired with population growth and economic development, already pose a significant risk to the Nile Basin countries and it is only expected to get worse in the years and decades to come. To adapt to these changes and mitigate their socio-economic impacts, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is focusing on governance and the optimal management of Nile Basin water resources.
The NBI has partnered with the German Ministry of Cooperation (BMZ) through the German Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to lay the foundations and support the NBI’s readiness for accessing climate finance. NBI is developing its readiness for accessing climate funds and as part of this process, they are reviewing and updating their 10 year climate strategy, incorporating an environment, social, and gender related safeguards checklist and a climate proofing policy.
adelphi is supporting NBI in the process of formalizing its comprehensive Climate Strategy for the period 2023-2032 incorporating the mentioned safeguards. In addition adelphi is supporting the development of a pathway for a transboundary river basin organization to access various climate finances.
