Support for the GIZ Sector Project Marine Protection

Marine conservation plays an important role in international policy and development cooperation. For example, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 "Life Below Water" of the 2030 Agenda calls for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources. German development cooperation supports marine conservation in a variety of ways. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) promotes marine conservation in its partner countries through concrete projects, but it also participates in and influences international policy and implementation processes. It works in international negotiations, through agenda setting, and through trans-regional and global initiatives to promote the interests of developing countries and strengthen their capacities for greater protection and sustainable use in marine conservation. It is also committed to making progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and SDG 14 in its partner countries.

With the project, adelphi and the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) contributed to the strengthening and advancement of German development cooperation and policy in the field of marine conservation. To this end, they supported and advised the Sector Project (SV) Marine Protection of the Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in its work for the BMZ, namely in the areas of technical and policy advice to the BMZ, innovation and portfolio development, as well as communication and relations to experts. Topics included marine nature conservation, marine protected areas, concepts for sustainable use of marine biodiversity, marine and coastal ecosystem services, marine "nature-based solutions", marine governance, marine and coastal spatial planning, integrated ocean management, science-policy transfer and sustainable marine economy.
