In recent decades, the African Development Bank has financed numerous energy-related projects in its regional member countries, helping to foster economic and social development. In order to prepare its operations for the dynamic challenges which are arising in the energy sector, the bank developed an energy strategy to guide the interventions over the coming years.
To inform and supervise the energy strategy, adelphi was commissioned to prepare a background study on challenges and trends in the African energy sector. The paper touched on trends and options as regards these challenges, including the integration of independent power producers into energy markets and social policies to increase the affordability of electricity for low-income groups.
The study was based on an extensive review of existing literature, interviews with experts and was subject to peer-review. Financing was provided by a GIZ initiative.
