Many urban areas - not only in India - are facing degrading environmental and socio-economic conditions due to haphazard urban development. Major concerns include poor sanitary conditions, inadequate infrastructure, air and surface water pollution. The aim of the project, in which adelphi was a major partner, was to promote the concept of urban sustainability management through training of relevant stakeholders and decision-makers in five selected Indian cities.
In order to tackle these problems, the concept of urban sustainability management includes, among others, development and implementation of integrated urban management plans, interdepartmental collaboration, and stakeholder involvement. Projects cover improvement of sewerage systems, garbage and solid waste management, infrastructure such as roads, water and electricity, and green belts.
