International exchange and learning on supporting climate mitigation at the local level

In the light of the sluggish progress to international climate negotiations, the actions taken at municipal level to achieve emission reduction targets are gaining increasing significance. National governments and climate policy instruments such as the German National Climate Initiative (NKI) play an important role in promoting climate action at the local level. In Germany, the NKI provides financial and other support for municipalities’ work on developing strategies, investing in efficient and renewable technologies and other activities.

This project was designed to stimulate international discourse on national funding strategies for municipal climate action. This involved identifying relevant partners and policy instruments in a number of industrialised countries and emerging economies. The goal was to determine the potential for an exchange of experiences among political decision-makers in this field at the international level, and to connect with the discussions ongoing in Germany. Exchange and learning from mutual experience were the key elements here. During the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in Doha, adelphi organised an event to promote international networking in the field of municipal climate action.
