Nepal is still among the poorest and least developed countries in the world, with 25% of its population living below the poverty line. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, providing a livelihood for 75% of the population and accounting for about one third of GDP.
A major obstacle for the further economic development and for the improvement of the living conditions of the poor is the scarcity of energy supply. Private households, particularly in rural areas, are depending on biomass (e.g. firewood or agricultural wastes), and industries are depending on imported coal and oil.
adelphi together with its partner Integration will support the Nepal Energy Efficiency Programme (NEEP) to improve the institutional and personal capacities of the Energy Efficiency Centre within the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
The support includes setting up a national energy auditor training and certification scheme and building a market for energy audits within Nepal. During the two year project the consulting team will raise awareness among government, industries and banks on energy efficiency, enhance the national knowledge base on the topic and undertake pilot energy audits.
