The project aimed to support the transition of the Deemed University of Manipal in Karnataka, India into a sustainable campus. The project took a two-winged approach: Catalysing the establishment of an ISO 14001 certified environmental management system on campus to directly impact the academy’s resource use and environmental performance, while promoting the setup of a study scheme on environmental management that serves to multiply environmental management capacities beyond the campus itself.
The scope of the environmental management system included classroom buildings, residential housing for roughly 15,000 students and staff members, as well as the university hospital. Activities carried out included: a situation analysis of existing facilities and environmental performance on campus, a technical gap analysis, planning environmental measures and implementation of the environmental management system; organising a study tour to German universities that have successfully developed on-campus environmental management and environmental management studies.
