Africa is a continent with abundant renewable energy resources and harbours enormous potential for the production of green hydrogen. This produced hydrogen is a key technology in the fight against climate change, especially in the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as the chemical and steel industries. Green hydrogen offers African countries the opportunity to secure their energy supply sustainably and reduce their dependency on fossil fuels. It also opens up considerable export opportunities: surplus electricity can be converted into green hydrogen and exported to Germany, for example, where demand for clean hydrogen is set to rise sharply in the coming years. These developments could turn African countries into major players on the global energy market.
In order to support African countries in realising this potential, GFA, intec and adelphi have been commissioned to offer country- and context-specific expert advice on thematic priorities in the field of green hydrogen and its derivatives. To this end, expert pools are being formed for various topics along the hydrogen value chain. adelphi particularly focuses on transformation strategies and the establishment of networks as well as environmental impact, sustainability and certification of hydrogen.
The H2Uppp funding programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection accompanies and supports the market ramp-up of green hydrogen and Power-to-X applications in selected low- and middle-income countries. In particular, H2Uppp promotes the early phase of green hydrogen project development. The Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) has been commissioned to implement the funding programme.
