Feminist Approaches in the Climate and Environmental Portfolio of German Development Cooperation

The BMZ adopted the Feminist Development Policy Strategy in March 2023. 93% of the new project funding committed by the BMZ should promote gender equality by 2025. The new Gender Action Plan translates the vision formulated in the strategy into detailed goals, indicators and illustrative measures. The empowerment of women and marginalised groups in the context of climate change is, among other things, an important topic.

On behalf of the GIZ sector programme Promotion of Gender Equality adelphi explored options for anchoring feminist perspectives in the environmental and climate portfolio of German development cooperation in a scoping paper and in four project drafts. The focus was on concrete gender-transformative approaches in the climate, energy, water and biodiversity sectors as well as in financial cooperation as a cross-sectoral area. The paper was based on literature research and interviews with experts.
