The project "Expert Pool on the Global Plastics Treaty in Support of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution (HAC)" represents a crucial step forward in the fight against plastic pollution, spearheaded by the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC) and the High Ambition Coalition (HAC). The Expert Pool consisting of the adelphi team and four people from the Wuppertal Institut operates under the Support Project Marine Litter of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
The primary objective of the Expert Pool is to furnish timely and tailored assistance to the HAC, its constituents, and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) throughout the negotiations for the global plastics treaty. The pool is committed to delivering a comprehensive suite of services designed to foster the formulation of impactful and ambitious strategies to combat plastic pollution. These services encompass the organization of expert workshops, the preparation of informative materials such as fact sheets and policy briefs, the provision of strategic guidance through position papers, editorial support, the facilitation of capacity-building webinars, and event moderation. While the array of topics is expansive, a particular emphasis is placed on addressing issues such as economic instruments, phase-out plans, bans, standards, and sectorial approaches aimed at mitigating plastic pollution, all within the overarching framework of advancing circular plastics economy principles and sustainable practices throughout the plastic value chain.
With a diverse ensemble of experts, the Expert Pool boasts comprehensive knowledge and expertise spanning circular economy principles, waste management strategies, recycling techniques, prevention of marine plastic pollution, and international negotiation dynamics. This collective proficiency equips the team to effectively navigate a spectrum of challenges and opportunities associated with the reduction of plastic pollution and the negotiation of the treaty.
