The Maghreb states (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) face major challenges as their urban populations grow rapidly. In response, civil society members, mayors and state councils are creating innovative ideas for urban development. adelphi advised Germany’s Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) CoMun Programme in developing and implementing a design competition between the North African states.
The goal incorporated identifying many promising project ideas and municipal partners that can support implementing the projects further. In the summer of 2009 alone, the project brought together relevant ministries and research institutes from the three countries who collaborated in developing a common strategy for the competition.
