Madagascar, one of the oldest islands in the world, is characterised by a unique biodiversity and a wealth of natural resources, of which a large part of the population is economically dependent. At the same time, the country is one of the poorest in the world. Environmental degradation and a high level of climate risks caused by droughts, heavy rains, and hurricanes pose a threat to the sustainable development of the country.
In cooperation with GOPA, adelphi carried out a climate risk analysis in Madagascar, which identified so-called "vulnerability hotspots" and developed efficient and effective climate adaptation options. The project was part of the programme "Protection and sustainable use of natural resources" (Programme d’Appui à la Gestion de l’Environnement, PAGE) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The vulnerability of the three regions of Analamanga, Boeny, and DIANA was analysed, with a focus on high-risk sectors such as water management, agriculture and livestock, and critical infrastructures. The climate adaptation options developed through adelphi and GOPA’s risk analysis will support the implementation of the Madagascar’s National Adaptation Program (NAP).
