Climate change mitigation at the local level – Dialogue, analysis, and good practices

Climate protection has become a central issue for local authorities throughout Germany. The number and the variety of local approaches to climate change mitigation is growing. Programmes such as the National Climate Initiative and the Guidelines on Promoting Climate Protection Projects in Social, Cultural and Public Establishments for Municipalities have kickstarted a large number of activities.

Supporting local mitigation activities is becoming an increasingly complex political domain. The Federal Ministry for the Environment entrusted adelphi to conduct a policy analysis and a series of interviews, focusing on organisations and stakeholders engaged in local climate change mitigation. The project furthermore aimed to promote the exchange of good practices at the regional, national and international levels. During the 17th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Durban, adelphi co-organised a side event on how governments can offer its support to climate mitigation activities at the local level.

The results of the policy analysis will inform the exchange process between the Ministry of Environment and relevant stakeholders, further improving mitigation strategies and support schemes for climate mitigation activities at the local level. The project was an undertaking of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
