The serious effects of climate change are in principal recognised by the Indian national and state governments. This is indicated by the 2008 National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and the 22 endorsed or considered State Action Plans on Climate Change. For example, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana) have endorsed State Action Plans since 2012. Considering the overall importance of the industrial sector for the country's economic development, however, the NAPCC and the SAPCC both do not sufficiently address climate change impacts as well as adaptation measures related to the industrial development.
Against this backgrop, INTEGRATION Environment and Energy GmbH, adelphi and Ifanos concept & planning are undertaking the project "Strengthening resilience of India's private sector: climate change adaptation in industrial areas" in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). As part of this project, adelphi and ifanos selected four industrial areas based on a screening process and carried out a detailed climate risk assessment for these areas. In that respect, adelphi and ifanos provided the international backstopping to a team of local experts to:
Develop a methodology for Rapid Climate Risk Analysis for direct and indirectly included climate hazards and vulnerabilities of industrial areas,
Perform a preliminary screening of climate risks in existing and upcoming industrial parks in the States of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,
Select one existing and one upcoming industrial area in each of the two states,
Conduct a Rapid Climate Risk Analysis and baseline for the 4 study cases.
