Papua New Guinea (PNG) stands out as one of the world's most biodiverse nations, boasting rich natural and mineral resources. However, despite these assets, the country faces significant threats from environmental and climate change impacts, which jeopardise its peace and security, as well as its social, economic, and ecological stability. These issues are intricately linked with and intensified by conflicts over land, forests, fisheries, and mining. Moreover, community disputes, displacement, internal migration, and violence related to witchcraft accusations further complicate the situation.
Working alongside the Asian Development Bank (ADB), adelphi global is crafting a climate security briefing for PNG, focusing on specific regions such as Port Moresby, Bougainville, Hela, Southern Highlands Province, and East Sepik. After conducting joint field research in October and November 2024, coupled with thorough literature and desk research, this strategic document will offer an in-depth analysis of the primary climate security risks and suggest practical measures to bolster ADB's future strategies in PNG. The insights and data gathered through this initiative will contribute to ADB's Fragility and Resilience Assessment (FRA), ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the country's climate and security challenges.
