How the populist right is threatening climate adaptation

Berlin, 2 July, 2024 – After over two decades as a leading figure at adelphi research and adelphi consult, Walter Kahlenborn is stepping down from Management. The co-founder of adelphi will support the company in an advisory role.
Throughout his impressive career at adelphi, Kahlenborn led numerous pioneering research and consulting projects both nationally and internationally. He played a crucial role in developing Germany's climate adaptation policy and was instrumental in the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Over the years, he contributed to more than 200 projects and drove the creation of new business areas and subsidiaries such as adelphi global and phiyond.
Mikael Henzler, co-founder and Managing Director of adelphi, praised Kahlenborn’s contributions: “Walter has significantly shaped adelphi with his foresight and commitment. It has been a pleasure working with Walter for the past 23 years.”
During his time at adelphi, Kahlenborn analysed climate change risks and explored the limits and potentials of climate adaptation in Germany. He developed an internationally standardized approach to climate risk analysis and supported the establishment of the Climate Adaptation Centre. Additionally, he worked on numerous projects related to green economy, sustainable finance, sustainable consumption, and sustainable procurement. He led consulting projects in the areas of renewable energy and Smart Cities.
Kahlenborn’s key clients included the Federal Environment Agency, the European Commission, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, as well as international organizations like the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat and the UN Development Programme.
