Climate change, water and food scarcity, resource conflicts and environmental refugees threaten both international and human security. adelphi and Germanwatch look at these issues in a project targeted at informing secondary school and university students, facilitated by the German Environmental Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
Vulnerability and missing adaptation capacities lead to conflict in affected societies and impede peaceful development. How can politics and society prevent potential conflicts and benefit from cooperation? How can local and international developments be understood at an early stage? What are possible solutions and how could they be implemented? adelphi and Germanwatch are currently explaining these complex and correlated topics to young adults and students during the first training event on environment, conflict and cooperation in Berlin. It will be followed by two more this summer and the following winter.
The first two days are reserved for high school student groups, while the 13th and 14th of February are open for individual student participation, including from universities. A variety of learning methods has been designed to make the topic accessible to students. Contributors from adelphi will guide the students through an interactive exhibition that covers issues such as water scarcity, energy security, climate change, land use, war economies, human security and conflict resolution as well as peace building. In lectures and panel discussions with representatives from the federal government, business, science and civil society, students get insights with respect to climate and environmental policy making.
German-speaking students still have the opportunity to sign up for a series of lectures and a panel discussion as well as a UN Security Council simulation on climate change and security, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday (13th and 14th February) at the Federal Press Office in Berlin. Participation is free of cost, but registration is mandatory (email to woltersadelphi [dot] de (wolters[at]adelphi[dot]de)). For detailed information visit www.krium.de (in German language only).
