As part of its series on “Global Ideas”, the radio station “Deutsche Welle” is presenting STREAM’s success in Indonesia. adelphi is supporting the flagship project on sustainable tourism in Indonesia.
The video shows ways of implementing communal climate change adaptation: From the beginning, local stakeholders were involved in the planning and implementation of activities in order to ensure broad acceptance and a continuation of adopted measures even beyond the project period of STREAM (Sustainable Tourism through Energy Efficiency with Adaptation and Mitigation Measures in Pangandaran). For example, a nursery for mangroves was set up. This measure did not only lead to an increased number of planted trees as such, but also helped to create jobs and cultivate seedlings that are adapted to the respective environment. School children from 30 schools within in the region support the planting and take care of the now 35,000 small mangroves and thereby learn about the importance of the ecosystem.
Participation is an important component of the project, which again is part of the “International Climate Initiative” of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. adelphi is a member of the consortium that implements STREAM in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism.
The overall objective is to build a sustainable infrastructure for climate-friendly tourism in Pangandaran, using effective climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism plans to transfer the results from these projects to other regions of the country.
