The monetary and economic value of animals and plants will be one of the topics on the Rio+20 agenda. Before the start of negotiations, the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag has assigned adelphi to analyse the positions of the different stakeholders.
Today, the decline of biodiversity is not only one of the most pressing environmental challenges but has also become an economic problem, since the loss of species implies financial losses as well. In light of this situation, an increasing number of experts have voiced the necessity to measure the economic and financial advantages of biodiversity. However, this also raises a number of questions and dilemmas, e.g. regarding intellectual property rights, the sharing of access to and benefits from ressources as well as other sets of values and the influence of economic mindsets.
In order to support the understanding of these interrelations before the Rio+20 conference, the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag has assigned adelphi to analyse positions, opinions and arguments of relevant stakeholders regarding economic valuation systems in the context of biodiversity and the Rio+20 negotiations. The Berlin Think Tank will conduct this study in close cooperation with Austrian research institute ICCR.
