At this Thursday’s side event on “Solutions for the German Energiewende and global climate protection”, Holger Loesch (Federation of German Industry, BDI), Viktor Elbling (German Federal Foreign Office), Dr Gerhard Praetorius (Volkswagen Group) and Alexander Carius (adelphi) engaged in a lively debate on the German energy transition.
BDI board member Holger Loesch recognized the innovation potential ambitious climate policy measures and the legal energy package of the “Energiewende” have on the Germany industry, but pointed to short term economic impacts due to rising energy costs.
The Foreign office’s Director General Viktor Elbling argued for new partnerships with developing countries and transition economies where German can share its experience and offer advice to assist these countries in their transformation and development processes. Volkswagen Group’s corporate sustainability director Dr Gerhard Praetorius illustrated how the automotive industry become a player in the energy transition by providing its know-how for decentralized energy systems and new storage capacities for electricity from renewable sources. However, the debate also indicated significant efforts German industry has to take to keep pace with the process of rapid transformation of the energy systems in Germany.
