Interest in emissions trading as an instrument for putting a price on carbon and thereby curbing greenhouse gas emissions is growing in many countries of the world. Government officials and carbon market experts discussed latest developments and prospects during a COP18 side event hosted by the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP).
The prospects for the development and implementation of emissions trading systems (ETS) have recently developed very positively in many parts of the world. This key message of the event was reflected by both the variety of speakers and the open discussions with the audience. Speakers from Australia, China, New Zealand and the Province of Québec in Canada offered insights into the latest developments regarding ETS in their respective jurisdictions.
Besides technical design issues, panellists also highlighted the value of cooperating with other countries and regions in developing an ETS, and provided examples of their cooperation activities in this field. adelphi provides scientific and technical support for the ICAP Secretariat, and in this context assisted in organising and conceptualising the event.
