Planetary Security Conference 2019 to focus on risks on the ground

The fourth Planetary Security Conference will take place on 19 and 20 February 2019 in The Hague. Under the title #Doable, the conference will focus on concrete actions to address climate-related security risks on the ground.

The fourth Planetary Security Conference (PSC) is coming up soon (full programme). This year, the focus will be on the contribution of land and climate policies to peace, on urban risks and instability as well as on the geopolitics of the energy transition. Geographically, the conference will put a spotlight on four regions where climate-security is pressing: Iraq, Mali, Lake Chad and the Caribbean island states.

Furthermore, the conference aims to review of progress made on climate-security relating to the Hague Declaration on Planetary Security. The conference will take place on 19 and 20 February 2019 in The Hague. It is set under the theme ‘#Doable’ and wants to make an impact with ideas for practical and pragmatic deliverables. The collected ideas will be feed into the UN Climate Summit in New York in September 2019.

Online plattform to present progress on action areas

The last PSC in December 2017 saw the launch of the Hague Declaration on Planetary Security. Signed by over 100 high level signatories and setting out a shared agenda for action on climate-security, the declaration was the first ever call to action to address climate change and security and included the following six action areas:

• finding an institutional home for climate security,
• enhancing coordination on migration,
• strengthening urban resilience,
• joint risk assessment in Lake Chad,
• climate and conflict sensitive development in Mali, and
• supporting sustainable water strategies in Iraq.

Progress made on these six action areas over the last year is presented in this online platform and will also be presented at the PSC on the 19th and 20th February 2019.

The Planetary Security Conference (PSC) is the key global event on climate change and security, bringing together high-level policymakers, experts and practitioners to explore concrete actions on development, foreign and security policy to address interlinked climate-security risks in a holistic way. The previous editions were attended by over 300 representatives from more than 70 countries.
