Due to its energy consumption and industrial processes, the German private sector was responsible for around 60 % of national greenhouse gas emissions in 2009. Many companies are aware of the need for action and have stepped up their efforts to decrease their emissions. However, the methods chosen and the success achieved vary widely across businesses and sectors. As part of the study, which is being carried out on behalf of Berlin-based think-tank the Humanistic Management Center, adelphi is categorizing the emissions of the 30 largest DAX-listed companies as either direct emissions, indirect emissions through energy consumption, or other emissions along the supply chain. The data is being used to determine climate impact trends, and to draw conclusions about their commitment to lowering emissions. The study also takes into account how transparent the information that companies make available about their emissions is for consumers.
