The combination of rapid economic and population growth in South Asia, as well as the resultant increase in energy consumption and its inefficient use, is leading to severe problems. In order to increase energy efficiency, adelphi is running a capacity-building programme in this region.
India, Nepal and Bangladesh are among the countries in South Asia that have recognised the enormous potential of efficient energy consumption and have created the initial institutional structures necessary to enable an extensive implementation of energy-efficiency measures. Some of these structures are still in the very early stages of development, and will now be accelerated through the comprehensive capacity-building programme that adelphi, on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is busy carrying out in these three partner countries.
As part of the “Regional Energy Efficiency Project (REEP)”, a number of different measures such as training events, dialogue events, conferences and study trips have been planned to equip participants both technically and methodologically to develop and implement demand-oriented measures and advisory services in the area of energy efficiency. Furthermore, the partner organisations involved will be structurally supported by the development of a regional network on energy efficiency, and a regional exchange of best practices in energy efficiency will also be made possible. This will be expanded at a later stage through an international network on energy efficiency.
